‘The Great Gatsby’ follows a story about love between a man and a woman. This is in contrast with its themes of wealth and the comparison between the millionaires and the less wealthy. This is expressed through the costumes created by CATHERINE MARTIN alongside with the famous Prada.
The film has aspects of mirroring the society at the time by showing women as housewives, however the audience felt a connection through the use of costumes from retailers such as Karen Millen, making it relevant to the 21century.
The Oscar nominated make up artist Maurizio Silvi played a crucial role creating looks for the diverse cast. Maurizio favoured using MAC products to create the flapper looks such as; Prep+Prime for vibrance and lasting. MAC pigments such as Rosegold were used for Daisy and Antique Green for the show girls.
The film is iconic because although it took place in the 1920’s, the make up looks such as the bold red lip and the black smokey eye is popular today.
Daisy had a warm and classic 1920s bob alongside with delicate make up to go with her fair skin with soft brown shadows. Black shadows were used on the party girls with darker hair. This made Daisy a style icon of the natural look.
One thing that showed the era difference was eyebrows. In the Great Gatsby all of the cast had a 20s century thin and downward pointing eyebrows, in contrast with the thick and bold arched brow that has been seen on every runway this year. The costumes that defined the characters were the over the top sparkly and expensive looking dresses to show their lavish lifestyles. Accessories such as the reoccured bejewelled headbands to show glamour and style of the characters.
